Pull the Lever (Part 2)

View Part 1 of Pull the Lever.

Originally posted on January 31, 2025.

Gin awoke to the sounds of fires crackling and the smell of smoke in the air. The explosion should have killed it, but he didn’t FEEL dead. He body ached as he blinked his eyes open. He knew he should get up and get out of there, but he was still trying to reason how he survived. He was sure it was just a matter of math, which he was usually pretty good at figuring out in his head; yet he couldn’t seem to do it now.

As he got to his feet, the answer became clearer; his body had changed again. He was much more feminine than he had been. He likely fused with another woman, possibly several. It used to be easy for him to triangulate things like where they must have been standing and how many just by thinking, but his brain struggled now. He considered himself lucky to be able to reason that his mind must have been fused this time as well with most of his genius gone in an instant. He still remembered who he was, the fusions, and the machine malfunction, but couldn’t remember why he had built the machine in the first place or what it was actually supposed to do. He certainly no longer had the ability to recreate the thing. He remembered plots of television shows he never watched and about promising to meet a friend at the gym tonight. Then another small explosion snapped him back to more immediate concerns. He picked himself up and started getting out of this death trap. He stumbled in the heels he wore, so he ripped them off and went barefoot. Knowing how to walk in those things was NOT something he remembered how to do either. But was that something he should remember?

Pull the Lever (Part 1)

“You can’t do it!” Jackson shouted at his business partner Gin, “We’ll never get it back up and running again. And if it’s not working, we’ll never get back to normal!”

“We have to shut it down! It’s malfunctioning!” Gin insisted, “And it’s already too late for normal. This thing is already literally merging people’s bodies together. It’s only going to get worse from here. It could start fusing us with animals or inanimate objects! You could end up with pigeon wings for arms! Or a watermelon in your head instead of a brain! Right now, we’re still lucky we remember enough to know HOW to shut it down. If my fusion with Nadine had gone the other way, she’d be standing here befuddled with her head and my body instead of the other way around.”

“But how are we going to get Nadine back? Or...Frannie?”

Gin heard the pain in his friend’s voice and frowned as he looked at Jackson’s one feminine leg, which had once belonged to Jackson’s girlfriend, Frannie. She was one was one of the first people merged into someone else when the machine started malfunctioning. He knew Jackson felt responsible.

“It’s not your fault, man,” Gin said, “No one expected this to happen. But she’s gone. Keeping this thing on isn’t going to bring her back. But shutting it down will stop anyone else from going through that pain. I’ve done the calculations; this thing is going to be exponential. That’s so many more loved ones gone.”

Jackson paused for a moment. “Do it,” He said.

Gin pulled with all his might, realizing how much more difficult this was for him now that he had Nadine’s weak muscles instead of his own. He then grabbed with the other hand, but it still wouldn’t budge. But then it finally started to move and he noticed Jackson behind him helping to pull just as the explosions began...

This Is How I Amuse Myself

Lauren felt dizzy after getting off the amusement park ride. Something about it was much more intense than usual. As the dizziness settled down, she flipped out once she realized she was now in the body of some random guy! She desperately began to search the park for her former body; she finally found it as night fell. It was sitting on a bench holding an odd device.

“Give me back my body!” Lauren demanded.

“I’m afraid that’s impossible,” The man now in her body replied, “Our swap was a test -- a successful test! But I have placed pieces in the park, which will trigger a massive swapping event for everyone in the park. Well, everyone over there on that side of the park. I’ve quite taken to your body and I don’t plan on giving it up. But I think if you rush over there, you might be lucky enough to get a better body than my former balding, middle aged one.”

“Why the hell would you do this?” Lauren cried.

“It’s an amusement park, is it not? This is how I amuse myself. Now, you’d better hurry. I really think you’ll want to take your chances amongst the choas that’s about to happen...”

Green Light

"Try to flip the switch now.” Jonah instructed after making a few adjustments before asking, “Is it green? Is the light green?"

"No," Tara said feeling disappointed.

"It's okay. I'm still sure it has to be a loose connection to the power supply. I've just got locate it." Jonah began to reach further into the apparatus which he had created that had swapped their bodies.

It was weird for Tara to see her own body work on the machine. But it wasn't seeing her body act like a mechanical genius that was troubling; it was the fact that she found herself attracted to her own body now that she was in Jonah's. She felt distracted by watching him, confused by what she was feeling as she was essentially admiring her own body. She wondered if she just wasn't used to having his male hormones, but he was also worried about what she might suggest doing if they didn't swap back soon...

HyperSleep

Private Winston O’Grady had signed up for the military experiment to be placed in hyper sleep for twenty years. He was told in that time he wouldn’t age or dream. He’d enter the chamber in an isolated part of a secret facility, and it would feel like just a short nap before waking up. And so he entered and moment later to Winston, it felt like it was over and he exited the chamber. Except there was a lot wrong. The most obvious thing was his body -- it wasn’t his own! He was now a woman, dressed quite fashionably compared to his uniform. The there was the facility; it seemed abandoned. He wasn’t sure if he had slept for the full twenty years or not, or why he was in the wrong body. He began to explore, hoping to find someone...anyone. Ultimately, he stumbled across a phone on a panel with a bunch of buttons and knobs. There seemed to be a dial tone, but any number he remembered didn’t seem to connect. Even 911 came back as out of service. This was certainly strange. His next thought was finding a way out...

Memories

"I know your experiment is responsible for this! Switch me back now!" Ryan yelled from the body of Sgt. Maggie Wilson while pointing a gun to head scientist at the base where they all worked.

"I can't," he explained, "You only THINK you are Ryan! You ARE ACTUALLY Maggie! I just transplanted all of Ryan's thoughts and memories into you! I'm sorry that I lost you're original brain patterns! There's nothing I can do! I could effectively switch your brain patterns with his, he'd be back in here in two days doing the exact same thing you are now!"

Somehow Maggie knew he was right. She may think of her herself as Ryan. She could remember everything about being him, down to the smallest detail, but the fact that he could feel the sway of Maggie's hips as he walked the weight of her breasts...the muscle memory was just too familiar...

Nanites

He decided it was probably best to avoid her as the nanites recharged. He didn’t want to have to explain his new technology to anyone until he had the chance to have a little more fun with it. And now that he was for all purposes Ami, he decided he could have his first bit of fun.

Sorry

It had been ten years now since Theodore made the biggest discovery of his career. With the proper electrical stimulus, it appeared to be possible for two subjects to completely transfer thoughts. Essentially, he could build a rudimentary device to hit just the right frequency and two people would be able to swap brains. The potential seemed promising, and he worked to develop it with his young research assistant, Melinda.

Both Theodore and Melinda were eager to test out the theory, so they agreed to use the device on themselves. They simply put their hands on the device and turned it on. It began to buzz and the next thing Theodore knew, he had Melinda’s body. His amazement was short lived as he saw his own 70 year old body having a seizure on the floor.

After watching his own body die (and feeling guilty about Melinda being inside it at the time), he destroyed the device and burned his notes. And each month for the past ten years, he came by where his body was buried to place flowers. All that he had accomplished and all he gained had come at such a great price that he knew he nothing could ever be enough to say sorry...

The Clinic

Eric reached his hand around in order to try and feel ever inch of his new body. It was sort of amazing what the clinic could do. You’d simply select a body from the catalog, you’d go into the machine, and the next thing you knew, you’d have that body. Today, Eric selected the body of a beautiful Asian woman, and now that body was his. The technology had gotten so advanced that he didn’t just look this way, this was his actual body. With this body, he was capable of having cycles or getting pregnant. It was a phenomenal achievement in science. It was hard for him to believe this technology wasn’t more popular.

The Cube

What was his name again? Kevin? Aiden? Something like that. He was pretty sure he was a he, despite his current body -- then again, maybe he was originally a she; it had been so long that it was hard to remember. The professor had captured him so long ago that he didn’t even remember the details. But he could clearly remember the procedure of what the professor did each and every time. He’d wake up in his cube with his body in a form suiting the professor’s need. Last time, he had woken as a burly lumberjack to chop down some trees. After his task was done, he’d return to stasis in his cube. The pattern would repeat, and each time he’d wake up in a different body. Judging from his current form, he could only guess what the professor’s “needs” were right now; he was pretty sure this wasn’t going to be a pleasant time. He could vaguely recall the last time he was in a sexy female body, which was shortly after the professor had enhanced the properties of Viagra to last extra long. He was sure it was going to be something like that again. He sighed as he got out of his cube to tend to the professor’s needs.

“Who was she?” Lawrence asked looking down at the frozen woman in the glass box.

“No idea,” The man working at the Cryogenic Center replied, “People have been frozen here for years. We’ve lost a lot of records. We’ve had a lot of screw ups. This one, for instance. She’s one of the one whose brain just sort of melted inside the body. But, you know, its one of the ways we’ve pivoted as a business. We can sell the bodies to people like you.”

“You mean the sick and dying?” Lawrence sighed as he took another pill from the jar in his pocket.

The man laughed, “I mean the rich. Most of the people who come here ain’t like you. They ain’t coughing and wheezing or popping pills. Well, they may be popping pills but not to stay alive. Sometimes they buy, sure. But often times, they rent the bodies for a while, just to do stuff without consequences. Though a lot of times, what they do with the rented bodies -- let’s just say they don’t get their deposits back.”

Lawrence looked down at the woman again, “She deserves better than that.” There was a long pause before he added, “So, yeah, I’ll be her.”

“In that case, you go get ready in that room over there, and I’ll prep her up. The doctor will be in shortly to operate the equipment to transfer your brain into her body. Just a fair warning, the skin might stay blue for a few hours while you fully thaw.”

About to Get Some Bad News

Leo remembered being younger. Thirty or so years ago flying was the only option for traveling long distances. But you waited in hour long security lines for a flight that itself could take several more hours. Now it was possible to travel around the globe in a matter of a few minutes thanks to bodyporting. Granted, it had its own drawbacks. Since only one’s brain was teleported to the new location, you’d be spending your trip in the body of someone else. Leo certainly didn’t mind this aspect. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon for him to find himself in a body much younger than his own -- for instance, he couldn’t imagine the body he swapped with this time was any older than 25. You depending on them to pack their bags in accordance with your prior requests. Leo had instructed the person he swapped with to pack casual clothes, which she obliged with. Then there was the return trip. In order to swap back to your own body, you needed to visit a bodyporting hub. This depended on the person temporarily in your body also showing up on time. It was always possible for someone to be late. In this case, Leo had been waiting for quite a long time. It was even a more infrequent occurrence when your original body didn’t show and any attempts to get in touch were met with silence. Leo was about to be given that news any second now, and that he’d be stuck in this woman’s body until further notice...

They had mostly removed organs to learn about human physiology. With the aliens' advanced technology, matching blood types were irrelevant, and thinking that all organs were interchangable, placed many parts back in the wrong bodies. None of the abductees ever noticed a misplaced liver or intestine, but a misplaced brain? That's what happened to Doug! The aliens had picked it up (along with his heart) when splicing back a young woman named Janet...

Scientific Breakthrough

Visiting the rainforest was a dream come true for Grayson. He had studied for years to become a biologist and knew the unexplored terrain could hold many secrets. His first day out, he got bit by an unidentified bug. He tried to catch it, but it proved elusive. He was worried the next day when he felt ill. Soon he started to rapidly lose weight. It took about a week for the bug’s poison to take full effect in Grayson’s system. He had been hoping to find something unique, and he sure found it! After a recovery period, he returned to the rainforest. He needed to find that bug again! It was truly a unique species that had been capable of completely changing his gender with a single bite! If he was able to extract the poison, he might be able to engineer a reversal and get back to being a man. However, even if he couldn’t and he remained a woman, the scientific value of the bug’s gender-changing poison would be a breakthrough!

Long Process

It was the first step in a long process to get his body swapping machine up-and-running again. If he didn’t get it working soon, he was pretty sure Clara’s husband would kill him. But things were at least starting to look promising, but he worried that the various parts were all too fragile and worn from the first test that had accidentally swapped him into Clara’s body in the first place. It was going to be a long night.

He was actually feeling quite confident inside her body, but Maria was a little less patient. She insisted that John fix the device as soon as possible to get them both back to normal. John had tightened at least a dozen bolts already but many of the internal circuits were completely fried. The work was going to take at least a week to fix. This was news that he knew Maria would not be happy to hear.

Who Am I?

Originally posted on June 5, 2023.

It had been three weeks since Eileen and her husband had been captured by the mad scientist and locked in cells. And last week, Eileen’s husband was taken out for some sort of experiment and he never came back. Things got quiet for a while until the mad scientist took her for a bit of a tour where he opened doors remotely while guiding her around with his voice.

The tour was mostly empty cells, but there was a few failed experiments with mostly disfigured bodies. It was horrifying. As she neared the end, a cell door slid open and Eileen was shocked to see what seemed to be her own body.

“Did you clone me?” She asked with disgust.

“It’s more like a copy,” The voice of the scientist said, “You see, inside that body is the mind of your husband. I was able to transform him by copying your DNA. What may be most remarkable is that he thinks he is you. I have made it so he is not able to see you right now, but don’t worry, I already gave him a tour earlier and he asked quite similar questions when he saw you.”

“But if he doesn’t know who he really is...” Eileen thought about this carefully, “How do I know that’s not really Eileen? How do I know I’m not her husband trapped in a copy of her body?”

“You don’t,” Laughed the scientist.

“I might not really be Eileen,” She whispsered, “I might really be a man? Oh, god!”

This Will Change the World

Nearly everyone at the research center had attended the funeral of Dr. Alvin Hudson. The man had worked there for over 70 years; he knew everyone. He had done groundbreaking studies on longevity, and some were sure he had experimented on himself a few years that allowed him to work until the day he died, well into his 90s.

No one expected to arrive on Monday morning to see an excited young woman in the main lab.

“Woo! It worked!” She shouted as the first few people entered.

They looked at her puzzled before the woman kept explaining. “It’s me,” She said, “I’m Alvin! I did it! I cheated death! It’s a long story, but I did it! If you’e wondering why I’m female, well...the problem I had with regenerating was all on the Y chromosome, so I just had to eliminate it, and...here I am! Or still am! Yes, my old body still died. And I know this is all a shock, but it worked! This will change the world!”
